What: While easy-to-love momos—steamed or fried dumplings, originally of Tibetan origin—are eaten all around Nepal, momo jhol achar (momos served in a soup, also called simply jhol momo) are a specialty of Kathmandu. The familiar dumplings are filled with minced chicken or buffalo meat, or vegetables (usually spiced, finely chopped cabbage and carrot), then steamed and served swimming in a well-spiced soup, typically made from tomatoes, onions, chili, sesame seeds, garlic, and other spices, all cooked together and blended till smooth. While most Nepalis consider momos a snack food rather than a substantial meal, momo jhol achar is certainly more of the latter. It’s deliciously savory and hearty, especially on a cold day, as the soup is warming and the momos themselves are filling.

Where: Le Trio (two locations including Patan 44600, Jhamsikhel map) is a relaxed, slightly upmarket restaurant that serves a range of Nepali and Western snacks and meals, as well as good cocktails. This is a great place to try momo jhol achar, one of its most popular dishes.

When: Daily, 11am-10pm

Order: Pictured are the “veg mo:mocha with jhol achar” (Rs 260), filled with shredded cabbage, carrot, garlic, onion, and spices. The soup is tangy and rich, with a distinct umami taste. It’s a very satisfying meal.

Alternatively: We have heard good things about the momo jhol achar at Everest Momo off Lazimpat Road (Rani Devi Marg, Kathmandu 44600, map).
